The maritime hammock those communities are named for is old live oaks and sabals over salt-pruned understory. Pruning them right, and getting the HOA paperwork right, is most of the work.
The Hammock — the barrier island north of Palm Coast along A1A, from Washington Oaks down through Hammock Dunes, Ocean Hammock, Hammock Beach, Sea Colony and Island Estates — sits under one of the last intact maritime hammocks on the Florida coast. The live oaks and sabal palms there are the reason people bought, and every community has an architectural review board that agrees. Removals need justification and paperwork; pruning has to follow the community's specifications; and the county's tree ordinance for the unincorporated Hammock is stricter than Palm Coast's.
We know the process in each community — Hammock Dunes' ARB, the Ocean Hammock and Hammock Beach associations, the Sea Colony and Island Estates boards — and we bring the arborist assessment, the pruning spec and the certificate of insurance they'll ask for before the first cut. Most of what we do here is fine pruning: lifting canopy off roofs and lanais, thinning for wind, removing dead wood from 150-year-old oaks without changing how they look, and keeping the palms clean.

Questions from The Hammock homeowners
Does my HOA have to approve tree work?
In Hammock Dunes, Ocean Hammock, Hammock Beach, Sea Colony and Island Estates, removals and significant pruning go through the architectural review board. We prepare the packet — arborist assessment, scope, photos, insurance — and most are approved within a couple of weeks.
Is the Hammock under Palm Coast's tree rules?
No — most of the Hammock is unincorporated Flagler County, whose ordinance protects trees at a smaller diameter and treats live oaks as specimen trees. Permits or an arborist hazard letter are required for removals; we handle it.
Can you prune an old oak without ruining it?
Yes, and that's the whole skill. Reduction cuts back to proper laterals, thinning by removing whole small limbs rather than stripping interiors, and never more than about 15 percent of live canopy in a year on a mature oak.
My oak's canopy is on the roof. Do I have to remove the tree?
Almost never. Canopy over a roof is reduced and lifted; the tree stays. The ARB will prefer that and so will your property value.
